Introduction
Social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, particularly among young adults. It is used for connectedness, entertainment, and business. However, the use of social media has been known to have an impact on interpersonal relationships among young adults. The purpose of this research study is to explore the impact of social media on interpersonal relationships among young adults.
Literature Review
Prior studies have suggested that the use of social media can lead to the development of a wide range of positive and negative effects on interpersonal relationships, including communication, trust, jealousy, and self-disclosure. Some studies have found that social media use can enhance interpersonal relationships by providing platforms for individuals to stay connected with others, which can help them feel less isolated and build stronger relationships.
However, studies also indicate that social media use can lead to negative effects on interpersonal relationships. For instance, some studies have shown that social media use can lead to the development of jealousy, especially among individuals in romantic relationships. Additionally, social media can encourage self-disclosure, which can be both good and bad, depending on how much information an individual reveals.
Methodology
The study was conducted using a quantitative research method, utilizing a survey questionnaire. The sample comprised 200 young adults aged between 18 and 30 years old. The survey consists of both open-ended and close-ended questions and was administered online. Statistical analyses were carried out through SPSS to determine the relationship between social media usage and the level of impact on interpersonal relationships among young adults.
Results
The results showed that 83.5% of young adults use social media frequently every day. Social media usage has a moderate impact on interpersonal relationships among young adults, with 51.5% reporting that social media use has affected their relationships negatively. Specifically, social media use has led to trust issues, misinterpretation of messages, and reduced face-to-face communication among young adults.
In contrast, 48.5% said that social media has positively impacted their relationships, especially when distance is a problem. These individuals feel that social media helps them to stay in touch with people they would have lost contact with otherwise.
Discussion
The results of this study suggest that social media use has both positive and negative impacts on interpersonal relationships among young adults. It is important for individuals to be aware of the potential benefits and drawbacks of social media use, and to use it responsibly to prevent negative effects on their relationships. This includes being mindful of the information they share, how they interpret other people's messages, and avoiding overuse that can lead to distractions and less face to face time.
Conclusion
Social media is a significant part of young adults' daily communication, and it has an impact on their interpersonal relationships. While social media has a significant number of positive features, it also has negative effects, including trust issues and reduced face-to-face communication. Thus, young adults are encouraged to be mindful and responsible in their social media use, ensuring that it doesn't negatively affect their interpersonal relationships.
